Sales managers regularly ask me when the best time is to look for sales candidates. Is it the beginning of the year? Is it the end of the year? Or, is it in the summer when things slow down? I answer every sales manager the same way.
There is one time, and only one-time, that is the best time to evaluate sales candidates… And that is when you are not in need of hiring one.
Sales managers should always be interviewing and evaluating prospective candidates. When you interview only when you need to hire, you are prone to make poor hiring decisions. You know that every moment that the sales seat is open, sales opportunities are lost. And you’re right, you are missing them.
But, when you only interview when you need to hire you are likely to settle for less than stellar talent which further compounds your problem. Build into your management process time every month to screen candidates. The worst that happens is that you come across someone better than you already have on your team. A nice problem to have. Isn’t it? It’s sure better than the alternative.
